Sophie, St Helen and St Katharine

The Stars at Oktober Bend

This book is mainly about Alice who is a 15 year old girl who is stuck at the age of 12 by a traumatic assault that scars her for life. She can’t go forward. She can’t go back. But nothing can stop her from pouring her emotions into lovely poems. They are all that is left of her. These are left in unexpected places for people like Manny to find and marvel at.
Manny James was a child soldier who lost his family years ago. At night time he runs to escape the past which haunts him. When he finds the poems he knows he will never rest until he finds the writer of these beautiful poems. And then he sees Alice. He discovers her at night, sitting on her roof at Oktober Bend, staring at the stars. Manny knows this is the girl he has been searching for and this makes him determined to find her again. When they meet it is all he could have dreamed for… and much, much more…
This book is written from the perspective of Alice and Manny. I found it quite interesting to read from Alice’s perspective as it was written in her broken way of writing and at first I found it very hard to follow but after a while I got used to it and began to enjoy the book. I also loved the way Alice rote all of her poems down into the book because they were really emotional and the book wouldn’t have been the same without it. I think this book is for teenagers and young adults, but not really younger children or babies as I found it quite sad and it has some rude language in it.
My Rating 4.5/5 stars
