The Smell of Other People's Houses
The Smell of Other People’s Houses is about 4 different people's live becoming entangled together. The book is written in the view of 4 different people, Ruth, Dora, Alyce and Hank.
Ruth is filled with regrets, Dora's real family had crumbled and she was living with others, Alyce just wants to dance and Hank loses something very important along the way. The book is set in 1970 in Alaska.
The first 30 pages weren't the best start to the book, however afterwards the book fine. I feel as though the author didn't really stick the title as everyone left their true home. The book covers the topics of teen pregnancy, violence, fishing, running away from home, adoption and friendships filled with jealousy. I found the book ok but a bit "And they all lived happily ever after" at the end. I felt this was a bit unrealistic as it was all chaos till the last couple of pages. The book was a fun, quick read however I read it all at once and if you spread it out you may get a bit lost if you forget which character you were on.
Thank you for reading my review, I hope you have decided whether or not you want to read the book. I give it 6.5/10 stars. Thank you for your time.
