The Smell of Other People's Houses
An intriguing title and a very enjoyable read. This book really does appeal to our senses - from the vivid opening scene of a deer splayed open, Ruth kissing a still warm deer heart and the father twirling his bloody fingers through his wife's hair and her smell of marshy rain. This book is full of different smells so that we are almost there ourselves - the smell of soap, polish, tar, fishing, coffee and blueberry pie.
I was fascinated to learn of life in Alaska as I knew nothing about this. We follow 4 different narrators and 4 different lives and their stories are all interconnected and when their lives come together at the end all have come to a deeper understanding of themselves and their situation. This is my favourite so far.
