Maddy, King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Girls
The Smell of Other People's Houses
This book is really captivating in just how honest and realistic it is. I enjoyed it but did find the way the story was written and the back-story confusing and a bit disconcerting at first. However I quickly got into the actual story which was simultaneously so surreal but also so realistic. You could kind of relate to all the characters (who were beautifully and realistically written with a sense of familiarity, which really helps the story flow) but also there was a separation and mystery because of the place they grew up and their surroundings are so alien to us today. I found the book a bit odd and hard to understand in some places but overall is was an gripping book, that I think captured the essence of humanity (the good, the bad and the ugly all together) beautifully through its astoundingly written characters. I think this book is a enthralling read, despite sometimes being confusing at times.
