I thought this was a very great book that contained lots of good detail and used a style of writing that fitted the story well. I think this is a realistic insight to how life could have been in the 1920s for a boy like Beck. The author appears in definite control of the plot which is full of twists turns, and has a good ending. The characters are convincing in the way they talk, interact and how they handle situations, they also develop throughout the whole book, particularly the main character- Beck. Although the book is quite depressing the author creates the correct mood and the author uses dialogue to sometimes show the difference in the characters in the way they talk. They also used lack of speech from some characters to show their difference. However, I thought the book was a little predictable and better suited for someone slightly older.
