Beck was an amazing story, packed so full of various powerful emotions. Beck's story is a compelling path full of twists and turns and I distinctly recall the quote "...a determination formed in his head right then not to fall for the ruse of kindness again. It leads to nothing but pain." The reason I remember this quote so distinctly is because Beck is a negro boy, who has never been taught how to love. So when people abandon him, it hurts and the reader feels that. Overall, I think Beck was a very interesting book, it helped us, as the reader, to understand more about the lives of orphaned, black males in that era. Meg and Mal did a fantastic job on this book and I hope Mal would be proud of how Meg continued it and subsequently lead it to the spectacular ending that it was.
