Rebecca, King Alfreds Academy

The Bone Sparrow

I read this book as my first Carnegie book because the blurb really jumped out at me and I found that it was not at all misleading. Whilst reading this book I both cried and smiled. I found that the way it was written through a young person's mind was fascinating and really well done, however I could not get a good grasp at how old Subhi or any of the other characters were. I thought that this book was a bit of a wake-up call to what is happening to people all around the world, as I thought these things had stopped happening a long time ago. Also I really liked the relationship between Subhi and Jimmie because it shows how ignorant both sides of the fence are to what is happening outside/inside. I like the significance of the bone sparrow in both Jimmie's mum's story and in Subhi and Jimmie's story as it sort of represents hope and it gives them both something to rely on.
