Sophie, St Helen and St Katharine
Salt to the Sea
Salt to the Sea is a gripping war novel about how the lives and secrets of Emilia, a Polish runaway; Florian, a German mystery; Albert a conceited ‘sailor’ and Joana, a Latvian nurse, with the worst secret of all entwine together to create a touching plot amid war torn Germany. Each of them has their own dark secret, that no-one knows anything about. Each of them has their own reasons for running away. But will they make the perilous journey to safety alive?
This book is one of the best books I have ever read but it contains too many scenes of violence, murder or sadness to count. It is a book written from a different perspective on war to what you would normally expect and is very touching. I would recommend this book to anyone who can survive families being murdered in their beds, betrayal and the saddest book you could find on any bookshelf, but not to any younger children or very emotional adults.
