At the beginning it's quite well written in that the child has experienced an upsetting situation and the writer handles this well from the child's point of view. Later on it's interesting the way other characters know more about the relationships involved. You can definitely tell that it's set in the 1970s. It's realistic and the characters cover people from across the whole of society.
