Mrs G, UAH - Hooked On Books

The Bone Sparrow

The Bone Sparrow is set in a refugee detention camp in Australia. The story focuses on two characters, Subhi and Jimmie. Subhi was born inside the refugee camp and has only known life inside of it. He has a thirst for knowledge and stories. Jimmie is a native Australian girl who is extremely inquisitive and because of this character trait, she befriends Subhi.

Both Subhi and Jimmie need each other for different reasons and this is explored through the themes of friendship, freedom and family. The book highlights a very topical issue and is very cleverly written through the eyes of children.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, I felt that a small part of it was unrealistic - however as this is fiction and it is bringing to the forefront a very serious issue, I can overlook it. Definitely worth a read!
