The Stars at Oktober Bend

The Stars at Oktober Bend is a great example of how your feelings about a book can change as you read it. At first, I disliked it. The lack of capitals irritated me, the character of Alice didn't really make any sense, and I struggled to get past the first few pages. I thought that the author was trying to be edgy by missing out puctuation and throwing in poetry. Then something clicked. Rather than finding Alice's voice annoying, it became beautiful. Her brain injury meant that telling her story made more sense in a different format, and I began to get drawn into the rhythm of the story, and began to see things from her point of view. And while the concept of two people coming together and falling in love is hardly new, especially in YA, the romance between her and Manny was... perfect.
