The Smell of Other People's Houses
I was really excited to read The Smell of Other People's Houses, the cover particularly interested me. The title also intrigued me as it it quite odd. Before I even started reading this book I expected good things but nothing could prepare me for the disappointment to come.
The four characters Ruth, Alyce, Hank and Dora have problems. Unexpected problems that life keeps on throwing at them. Usually I quite like multi-character books but this book was almost too jumpy from character to character. Even though the sections were very long, I felt like I didn't have time to connect with each character whose stories were very complex, for example, Ruth. Experiencing a very harsh childhood and a young pregnancy, it's like Ruth didn't have time to explain herself. I would have liked the book to be written by just one character.
This book started off with a very high standard but then the bar dropped section by section.
