To initially state my personal opinion, I loved it. I don't think it will win, but I loved it. The reason I don't think it will win is although pretty much anyone can appreciate the ideas behind the story and Philip Reeve's seemingly inexhaustible imagination, it takes someone who is a fan of this sort of book to really enjoy it as much as I did.
The setting was possibly my favourite part of this book which is probably again because I absolutely love huge spectacles of carefully thought out world building especially in the science fiction genre and the concept of having these space train things as method of transport was very original. The planets themselves were places that I would love to visit because I generally love this type of setting.
The characters had just the right amount of development and depth to fit the story which was also creative and gripping. The description and writing style was also done well and suited this book. I did think it had quite a lot in common plot wise with Reeve's other book but this wasn't problem with me because I love those books too.
In all, I feel like I loved it because it was kind of a book made for me and people who already like the sci-fi genre. Some people will have issues with the plot or the setting but this could be because they don't like this overall type of book. It's a great example of modern sci-fi/fantasy fiction but I don't think it is quite right for everyone so it could have a hard time winning (I'm definitely rooting for it though!)
