The Smell of Other People's Houses
Set in Alaska this wonderful book tells the story of four teenagers - Ruth, Dora, Alyce and Hank. Four separate stories eventually entwine with each other.
Ruth and her younger sister are brought up by their strict catholic grandmother, Meeting a rich guy hurts her in many different ways, bringing back old scars and making new ones.
Dora has an abusive father and an alcoholic mother, Dora would rather stay at her friends house.
Alyce’s parents are divorced and she desire to be a ballerina, but rather than spending the holidays practising she helps her dad on his fishing boat.
The sole male voice belongs to Hank, who is the eldest of three brothers. When their mother remarries, life with the stepdad is awful enough to make running away the only option.
This book made me think about how awfully some parents treat their children, just because they had an awful childhood. This results to them abusing the next generation.
I would definitely recommend you to read this book.
