Jess, King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Girls
This book has definitely deserved its place on the Carnegie Shortlist. Saint Death had a powerful plot which gave us an insight to the world of danger. Throughout the whole book you are spellbound in suspense wondering what will happen next after every line you read.
The entirety of the book is about two friends who are trapped in poverty and the only way to break the social class is to risk their lives by gambling and cheating drug lords and gang warfare.
This was, as you can tell, an amazing read. The fictional plot was woven into the real world which I think made the whole story even more interesting.
However one thing that could be improved upon is the start of the book. Once you have read the first few chapters the book is a tense thriller but having a stronger or more surprising start to the read would've made it so much easier to not only read but to understand as well.
