Salt to the Sea
I really don't know where to start with 'Salt to the Sea', it is just an amazing book giving you true grit and real life stories that can stay with you forever. As soon as i opened the book, i felt i had to read it. Florian is a knight and is very mysterious and gives the reader something to try and work out and it gives everyone an independent view on the character, whether you agree with him or disagree, you understand him or you don't understand him. Emila is a strong character who's backstory is truly horrific. However, you do not learn the worst part till much later in the book. Her backstory gives you a glimpse into the true atrocities of Poland in the Second World War. This book constantly stabbed at my heartstrings, giving me something to think about every time i put the book down. I feel this book is from a very controversial angle as people are running towards Nazi Germany for help when many know the Nazi's as the greater evil. While they did commit terrible things, many pieces of historical fiction tend to look over the behavior of Stalin and his red Russian army. This story is truly upsetting and brings a true unsung disaster into brutal realism. We must learn the past is so powerful.
