Salt to the Sea
'Salt to the Sea' tells the story of a group of refugees who board the Wilhelm Gustloff in 1945 hoping to sail to safety. Through chapters of alternating viewpoints we learn the stories of the individual characters and the secrets they are all carrying. The author skilfully weaves their stories together, with only the strange and disturbing Alfred difficult to sympathise with. I knew nothing of the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff, and found the narrative powerful and affecting, especially as it reflects what is going on in our world today. An excellent read.
