Elise, Sir Harry Smith Community College

Salt to the Sea

This was an amazing book that will stay with me for a long time. It was the first of the nominated titles I've read and if all the books are this good then it'll be a very tough decision to decide the winner! I haven't yet read the book about Joana's cousin, but have gotten higher on the waiting list for a copy and can't wait to get back in the story!
This book is deep and a change from all the happy-go-lucky teen books out there with stereotypical characters. All the people in this book have secrets they don't want the others knowing, secrets that have haunted them from the start of the war. As the story progresses and trust is made, these secrets are revealed and the young adults realise they aren't as bad as they've made themselves out to be.
Altogether it's a soul crushing book that makes you question all sides of the war and make you never look at butterflies in the same way again.
