Katie, Sir John's Shadowers
I thought that this book was amazing - imaginative, weird and wonderful; I would love to live in Zen Starling's world! It combines beautiful description with high-paced action to create a book full of twists and turns for our hero. Zen Starling is offered adventure by the mysterious Raven - will he risk it all for his family, and the chance to be the Railhead he knows he is? Read to find out... Another brilliant part of this book was that the characters in it were incredibly diverse, with a range of races, genders and sexualities included. It's rare that I come across a book that has a variety of different characters, and for that to be the status quo in the eyes of whoever has the narrative. Something as simple and subtle as making minority groups feel normal, even in a world completely unlike our own, can make a world of difference to readers. The only thing I found with this book was that the pace stopped and started quite rapidly. Brilliantly action packed at some points but slightly slower in between. No real problem though - it gives you a break to process what's just happened! I loved this book and would recommend it to age 10 and above, although I think it suits all ages.
