Mrs Harris, Kingdown Karnegie

The Bone Sparrow

Subhi is a 9 year old refugee born in an immigration centre in Australia whose mother is a refugee from the Rohingya people in Myanmar. This is based on Australia's system of compulsory immigration detention aimed at all non-residents who are in the country without a valid visa and, therefore, must be detained. Subhi, who has never stepped foot 'Outside' has only ever known the red dust, gritty food, family tent, rats and fences. We find out about the 'jackets'who police the camp and his mother, who tries to tell him stories about life beyond the fences, his sister Queeny who is getting angrier every day about their situation and his older, best friend, Eli, who looks out for him. Subhi meets Jimmie, an Australian, who lives outside the camp and sneaks inside so that Subhi can read her mother's stories to her. This is a tragic story of deprivation, struggle and survival.
