Mrs J, Carnegie Cliffhangers
The Stars at Oktober Bend
At first I couldn't get past the lack of capital letters but this soon faded into the background as I became absorbed by the story. The two main characters are both damaged by their pasts. Alice is unable to make her voice understood following her brain injury and Manny cannot bring himself to speak of the horrors of his past as a child soldier. However, Alice has a rich, lyrical inner voice which is shared with the reader and through the poetry she leaves for others to find.
I was absorbed into the lives of all the characters in the book and loved it's poetic style. This is one of those books that lives with you long after you have closed its covers.
