It is a book about a young girl, the main character, named Joana and her little band of refugees. Meanwhile, in the woods, a Prussian named Florian finds another girl called Emily. Fate leads them to become the best of friends.
Different again; a sailor named Alfred dreams of serving his country, and when Florian comes, claiming to be a courier for the dreaded Erich Koch, leader of the Nazi party, Alfred is eager to help. He helps Joana and her gang on board the great Wilhelm Gustloff, amongst the other 10,000 people on the ship!
But when disaster strikes, they will all have to make sacrifices of their own.
