Mrs Moeller, Skinners' Kent Academy Shadowers
The Smell of Other People's Houses
It's 1970 in Alaska, which has only recently become the 49th state of the USA. It's a time of political change, but more importantly time for change for the young protagonists of this novel.
The Smell of Other People's Houses is told through the eyes of 4 young people. Their stories gradually overlap and interconnect and after the first third I was mesmerised by their deep feelings, emotional intelligence and simply their love and care for each other.
This is a wonderful novel, beautifully written and a worthy contender for the Carnegie Medal.
