Sam, Hope Valley College Pageturners
So there has been a lot of mixed reactions for this book with some people finding the topics covered in this heart- warming tale of a boy desperate to belong and find his place in the cruel and dangerous 1920’s with the book covering the boys mistreatment. I think this is an important part of his story and it shapes his character in a way a more childish book could not achieve because of this Beck is not suitable for younger readers. I like the way Mal Peet was not afraid to use more complex ideas and story lines to tell Beck's tale. Overall I think this book is refreshingly real and I would recommend it for older readers.
