This amazing book covers an exciting (but sugar coated) story about refugees fleeing a country they love because war has struck (in a child’s point of view). Elements of sadness are there because they leave a lot behind and lose their father. They travel to this mysterious mountainous place by train, car, van, boat, bike- whatever transport they can get. On their JOURNEY they cross many obstacles on the way and the book finishes with a slightly annoying but subtle and indecisive ending.
I love the way the illustrations are in a humorous semi- abstract style which can be changed to a dark and frightening style with a darker colour scheme. I also appreciate the way that mysterious characters or characters that are shown to be evil are less colourful than others as well as bigger than other characters.
I recommend this book really strongly to 4-8 year olds worldwide or any child who as experienced the death of a parent or had to flee their home in a war-struck country. I think it is inappropriate for children from the ages from 0-3 because it can be quite depressing and black.
