Izzy, Northampton Academy

The Stars at Oktober Bend

Alice is a girl who has had a brain injury and finds speech difficult. Alice lives with her grandmother and her brother and her family is seen as rather ‘odd’, with Alice’s disabilities and her grandfather being in jail.
I really enjoyed this book and I loved how there were poems throughout. This helped me to understand the character of Alice and added pace. I like how Alice’s relationship with Manny helps her character grow.
It took me a little while to get into this book but it proved to be quite gripping. One thing that I would say is that I would have loved to learn more about Manny, where he came from and his background.
Overall, a really well-written and beautiful novel.
