Carolyn, A&H Shadowers

Beck

This was undeniably well-written, and it's clear Peet and Rosoff had a great rapport; their writing styles blend well. Overall, however, I was not a fan of this book. I found the characters flat, and it felt at times that their racial and cultural identities were used as props for storytelling or vehicles for suffering, rather than for conveying an authentic and sympathetic portrayal of the experiences and identities of black and First Nations Canadians at this time. (Though having grown up in Kitchener-Waterloo, I have to admit is was cool to get a brief and unexpected shout-out!)
