The Bone Sparrow

"The Bone Sparrow" written by Zana Fraillon is a beautifully crafted and emotional book. It tells the story of a young boy named Subhi who has been raised in a refugee detention centre. Just as things start to look hopeless, Jimmie enters his life and Jimmie is real! She's a real girl from outside the fence.
This book caught me by surprise as I usually don't reach for this type of genre but I enjoyed it immensely because of the particular way it was written. I ended up not being able to put it down and finishing it made me want to read more!
My favourite thing about the book is it's frequently unexpected humour. Even though the book was heartbreaking, the parts that made you laugh made the novel even better!
The front cover of the book almost reminds me of a child's drawing, maybe Subhi even drew it. The swirly lines along the rim of the 'cage'-like drawing may represent barbed wire and the yellow surroundings could represent sand as the book is set in Australia.
