B, The Park Community School, Barnstaple
So far this is the most challenging and uncomfortable reads on the shortlist for me. I found it a difficult book due to its bleak subject matter.
Beck, son of a prostitute and a lonely sailor, is sent to live in an orphanage at the age of 11. From there he is chosen to go on an 'adventure' to Canada. What follows is a brutal account of Beck's life and all that he endures.
This is not an easy read and not suitable for younger audiences. I found its darkness unrelenting as Beck moves from one challenge to another.
Personally, I didn't like or enjoy this book.
