Wolf hollow is a book set in Second World War America from the point of view of a young but sensible primary school girl called Annabelle. She is currently in the awkward situation of trying to stand up to a bully (who threatens to beat her with a stick and kill her little brothers if she doesn't bring something expensive from her house everyday) without telling an adult for fear of making the bully - Betty - even more angry. Annabelle had already tried to stand up to Betty once but ended up on the receiving end of a beating with a large stick.
The next part of the chapters I read were about Toby, a First World War veteran whose experiences in the trenches had scared him for the rest of his life (presumably through post traumatic stress disorder). He is described as a quite scary man because even though he meant well, he couldn't always control his actions. He spent his days wandering Annabelle's family farmland and the surrounding area with three shot guns draped around his neck. They describe one particular encounter however, when randomly and with absolutely no ulterior motives he harvested all of their pumpkins for them in one night.
So far I am really enjoying this book so far and I can't wait to keep reading and find out what happens next. I think that something bad will happen in the village and out of ignorance the villagers will turn against Toby and he will be blamed.
