Phillip Reeve's imagination is unique. He has managed to craft a futuristic masterpiece for the patient reader. Unfortunately, I am not a patient reader.
After the first chapter, where protagonist Zen Starling is chased by a mysterious girl and a military-looking drone after stealing a gold necklace, the action dips.
I was struggling to move through this slow-moving and mundane novel, but I had to read on, and persevering with it turned into an excellent move.
Once Zen boards an unknown criminal's (Raven's) train, after escaping the authorities with the motorick (robotic human) named Nova, the action really starts to pick-up.
Zen becomes an undercover thief, wanted by the authorities, escaping from under their noses frequently throughout the book, captivating the reader with excitement.
I won't say anymore on the plot, but for those reading the first part, just keep reading and you'll begin to love the book.
