Mrs Rea, Merchant Taylors' Boys' School
Salt to the Sea
I loved the way the perspectives of Joana, Florian, Emilia and Alfred created such a rich and complex story through their first person narratives. Their backgrounds and secrets were cleverly revealed. The climax of the book, the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff, which could have been presented as a horrific historic disaster, with the loss of thousands of anonymous innocent people, was made personal and touching as the fate of each protagonist unfolded.
