Sputnik's Guide to Life on Earth
I read this book first due to its lack of appeal, but wow, it totally took me by surprise! This has such wide appeal with two stories cleverly intertwined and would make a great read aloud book. Sputnik arrives at the door of the Blythe family who Prez is to spend the summer with, as a break from the ‘Temporary’ foster home where he lives since his Grandad was taken away by the police. Everyone sees Sputnik as a dog, apart from Prez, who sees him as a mini human with super powers that just might stop our planet from shrinking. Prez doesn’t speak to anyone but can communicate through thought with Sputnik as they make a list of ten things that will save the earth. The adventures Prez and Sputnik have together are very funny, whilst the underlying story of Prez’s desperate need to find his Grandad is quite heartbreaking. Very clever and imaginative, I’m so glad I read it!
