Oscar, Fortismere

The Smell of Other People's Houses

I didn't really enjoy this novel. Despite it's clever storyline and very realistic characters, it took a very long time for the plot to become interesting.

The characters are exellent. Each teenager has been shaped and sculpted in a realistic way. Each character has suffered a tragic event in their past, and that really shows in their personallity.

What lets this novel down is the plot. For me it took far too long to become interesting, and even then it lacked depth. The novel spends too much time creating a realistic world, and too little time actually informing us of the events of this world.

This book is excellent, I see why it has been nomitated but it lacks the structure in other novels. Despite it's exellence I did not enjoy the book at all. I thought it was slow and boring, but for most people this book will probably be really enjoyable.
