Jonty, Fortismere

Beck is an interesting book. It tells the reader the story of a young orphan called Beck; while also showing us how coloured people were treated in the past. I thought the character development in the book was great, but it was all fitted into a small amount of time with little detail. I know that the book tries to convey to the reader the horror of being a black orphan in the past, but some of the themes in the book were just unneeded. Such as when Beck is raped; this is totally unneeded and it just comes out of nowhere. I have to say though that the author (Mal Peet) while writing this book died of cancer in 2014; but his work was continued by Meg Rosoff a great job. I liked this book apart from the disturbing scenes. I would give this book a 8/10
