Piero, Latymer Prep
This book is based on the many stories of refugees who came to the author’s country, Italy. It has a rather touching beginning where sadly the father is “taken” by the war. Metaphors like this really build the story especially for smaller children but more on my opinion later. The rest of the book is on the journey that they are forced to take, through woods, past guards and over oceans in cramped boats before finally arriving at their destination.
This book was thoroughly enjoyable while reading and (for lack of a better word) watching. Francesca Sanna’s work with the metaphors and hidden details shows skill and the time she put into it. This book is going to be hard to beat.
I would recommend this book to children aged 7-10 or for any child whose parents feel they should know about our current position with immigrants, and above all what people go through every day to have a better life.
