Debi, What Cool Books @WCB Library
The Stars at Oktober Bend
I like the way the author connects Alice's and Manny's stories by using Alice's poems. It's clever how Millard uses broken punctuation to signify Alice's inability to speak at the start. In contrast the language of Alice's poetry which talks about her experiences is beautiful, random and amazing. It just flows with such lyricism. Manny and Alice's developing relationship warmed my heart because although they were both damaged by trauma they helped heal each other.
I think the plot could have been stronger in places but it is one of my favourite books on the short list. Millard is a definite contender.
