The Stars at Oktober Bend

I found this book very confusing. It wasn't until I'd read more than halfway through that I started to connect with the characters as I could not understand the story. The author wrote it this way (without capital letters etc.) to show how Alice had been affected and her way of thinking, but the plot should have been more clear because there were some important concepts she didn't get across because of the childish language and point of view.
However, I admit that once I got into The Stars at Oktober Bend, it engaged me and I enjoyed it because Alice seemed to grow as a character and become more mature. The ending was predictable but happy. I was pleased how things turned out for Alice and Joey.
I would not recommend this book to people who care about first impressions because it is hard to keep on reading at the beginning. Nevertheless, it gets better. IMHO it ends up being not quite a great book, but a good one.
