Mrs McBarron, UAH - Hooked On Books
After reading just a few chapters of this book, my first thoughts were that I would not feel happy allowing our Reading Group Members to shadow this book. After reading other similar comments and discussions with staff members in our Reading Group, we have decided we will not be shadowing this book.
Having said that, I did enjoy this book. It was a well-written and easy read, if somewhat harrowing and disturbing in parts. The hardships Beck suffered and the way his character came across in general, made it easy to sympathise with him throughout his journey. I did feel that the ending seemed a little rushed, and because of this found it a little disappointing.
Even though it was a good book, I'm not convinced it should have been on the Carnegie shadowing shortlist. It is just not suitable for our shadowing group, and obviously, due to the comments on here, many others feel the same. Having said that, it does leave me somewhat confused as to what age group it is aimed at. Due to the simplistic style of writing, I would not say that it is necessarily an adult book either.
In summary, I would say an easy, if harrowing and disturbing read, suitable for readers over 16. Definitely not one for Carnegie Shadowing Groups.
