Sputnik's Guide to Life on Earth
I read Sputnik's Guide to Life on Earth, and I found it an 'interesting' experience. I've never read any other book by Frank Cottrell Boyce, but I found this book too fast-paced for me. The plotline is overcrowded; it feels like Cottrell Boyce couldn't decide what plot elements to take out. In the parts where it tries to be serious, it actually does that quite well. But then, it breaks all sense of emotion and goes back to being completely ridiculous. Now, whether that was the point or not, I personally found this to be repetitive and it eventually got stale. Lots of things happen in Sputnik's Guide to Life on Earth, but not much ever gets explained. It feels like the characters aren't actually living in the universe that has been created, as they never suffer any kind of consequences whatsoever. It IS an entertaining book sometimes, and I don't hate it. But it would feel a lot more satisfying if the issues ever got resolved. Some of the things that happen definitely break the law, but the characters never suffer any kind of legal consequences. I would give it 6/10, and I would recommend it for ages 7-10.
