The Smell of Other People's Houses

The book is set in 1970's Alaska, 10 years after it has become a state. The story is from the point of view of four teenagers, each with different childhoods and dreams. The first character you see is named Ruth. Her parents left her when Alaska became a state, so she lives with her old-fashioned grandmother who she dislikes. She has a boyfriend called Ray Stevens. The three other chracters are named Dora, who has an abusive father and a useless mother, Alyce, who has divorced parents, so she spends three months fishing in the north with her dad, and nine with her mother. Hank is the oldest of three brothers who run away from their house because of their horrible step father. The tight plot develops all four , but they come together in a neat and optimistic ending. Overall, I liked the book, because it was unlike anything I have read before.
