The Stars at Oktober Bend

The Stars at Oktober Bend was an intriguing and captivating read. It cleverly uses poetry and metaphorical language to create a beautiful story centred around our two main characters: Alice Nightingale and Manny James. Both are characters who suffer from traumatic experiences from their pasts and try to move forward in their lives.

Alice, while being an extremely well-developed character, writes in a peculiar manner which is later explained in the book. Unfortunately, this made it quite difficult to get through the chapters in her perspective- it was only when I was about half-way through the book that I truly appreciated the effort that went into her speech patterns and her poems. Nevertheless, she was a very enjoyable character who you couldn't help but love.
Manny is an orphaned boy who is troubled by his past. His story was as equally moving as Alice's, throughout the book he learns to forgive himself and move on with his life.
This book perfectly captured the cruelness of life and the struggles people must take to free themselves from their trauma and guilt. I would recommend it to anyone who is a looking for an unusual, but thought-provoking book.
