Mrs Davidson, West Hatch Readers
Where the World Ends
I was fascinated from the start by the fact that the story was based on actual events and was set in such a remote place. I now know exactly how remote St Kilda is and life was truly hard in such a place in the 18th century. One of the seasonal tasks was to harvest birds on a neighbouring island, but having been delivered there the fowling party was stranded as no boat came to take them back home.
In such a situation survival is paramount, and early on, you were reminded of 'Lord of the Flies'.
Some characters were definitely better drawn than others, and although the superstitions of the time really informed the plot, I felt I never really pictured the characters in my mind. Having said that I was hooked on the story and couldn't wait to find out the reason the party was abandoned.
