Phoebe, King Alfreds Academy

The Bone Sparrow

His mother and sister had to flee from their homeland’s cold, dark clutches so Subhi had grown up only knowing about what life inside the detention centre was like. He had been born there and there was a time when he thought he would die there as well. The only thing which kept all the people imprisoned there waking up every day was their desire for their ‘someday’: the day when they would be set free from this nightmare. That and they do what they're told in their terror of Beaver. But when Subhi meets a girl from the outside called Jimmie, he starts to realise that friendship can set you free. Jimmie’s mother had died and gave her a sparrow necklace made from bone- a bone sparrow. Even though she can’t read, she is determined to read her mother’s story which was how she first came to speak to Subhi. Everything was fine for him until one day when Eli was taken, and that was only the beginning. And then, Subhi was too late. When I first started reading this book, I didn’t think that it was the sort of book that I liked but as I read on I started to like it more.
