The book was immensely different to the Chaos Walking Trilogy which Patrick Ness is very famous for. It’s about a Christian boy coping with the confusion he feels about being gay and his struggle for acceptance and love: finding his ‘release’.

It’s a beautiful book which questions morals and raises questions about the society we live in today. The fact that Ness talks about a struggle that people all over the world are facing today is admirable since most sources of media today like to hide this away from younger audiences, keeping it ‘safe’ for them.

The book had a simple plot that was very easy to read and I read it within a day. It had a nice conclusion seeing the two narrators join together in the end. I liked the fact that Ness used two different voices to describe two different stories that still linked together and it was a interesting change to see that. The characters were realistic and believable and we could see how raw and how human these characters were. Release was a good 13+ book and I enjoyed it. I might not go out of my way to recommend it to others but I would probably read it again. I enjoy Patrick Ness as an author and would definitely look for some more of his books. 4/5
