After the Fire

After the Fire is a great book about one girl's recovery after the terrible events she witnessed in a cult. The book offers a different kind of read as its structure (before the fire parts and after the fire parts) allows both the reader and the main character, Moonbeam to plunge into the memories of her past life. Over the course of the book, Moonbeam learns her previous life was a lie and starts to understand what the real world is like. The book is about how people try to twist beliefs and rules to benefit themselves and how societies cut away from the real world think. This book is about how some people lead completely different lives and how you take your basic human rights as granted. A dark and gruesome book that I really liked. A strong contender.
