The Smell of Other People's Houses
Whilst commencing reading this book I was unsure on what to expect and was intrigued by the blurb. The book follows the lives of four teenagers living in Alaska during the nineteen-seventies. It shadows the life of Ruth, Alyce, Hank and Dora. The characters all lead separate lives but during the book connections are made between them. The characters’ lives consist mainly of hardships and the author-Bonnie-Sue Hitchcock describes these difficulties with an unwavering honesty. I particularly liked the setting of Alaska and thought it was unusual but effective for the plot. Whilst I felt the plot to be slightly lacking in action, I thought that the different narratives were well written and connection between the characters was ingenious.
