The Hate U Give
The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas was honestly so beautiful and stunning and all the other positive adjectives you could possibly think of. It challenges society in such a way that can only make you stop what you’re doing and read. The book brought a new type of excitement and interest into reading and really brought me so much joy. I loved it with all my heart and back as it was so gripping and it toyed with my all my emotions.
The story follows Starr - a girl who grew up in the ‘hood’ but studies in a posh high school. Starr is ashamed of who she is and hides her true self. She witnesses the tragic shooting of her childhood best friend by a police officer and wants to bring justice to his death but what she says could risk everything for her community and could put her family and friends all at risk.
Thomas takes you on a rollercoaster ride of emotions as you see Starr’s life as your own. Not only does this book have such a powerful, moving female protagonist but a poinient message and shows us something all around us whether we like it or not. Angie Thomas points out that racism is everywhere and it’s integrated into our everyday lives and society tells us it’s okay - but it’s not and the way Thomas portrays that is absolutely gut-wreanchingly fantastic and I thank her for such an amazing addition to today’s collection of modern books.
All the characters are so raw and human and the way Thomas expresses them not like they were ink dots on a piece of pulped wood but as U or I might. The ending concludes the book nicely and it wraps all the loose ends up easily and simply. THUG is definitely not for younger audiences because of all some of the touchy subjects but a book like this growing up can change peoples views for a very long time so I do think everyone should read this in some point of their lives. The Hate U Give is so moving that it could move a stone wall ten fold and it did move me and I loved the book. Throughout this, I have literally just spewed praise out for this book because it truly deserves it. I adore this book and everything within those two covers. Everyone should read it and I will definitely be reading it again. 5/5
