The Hate U Give

The Hate U Give may be one of the best books I have read this year. It is narrated by Starr, the main protagonist of the book and the main theme is black people being shot by white police officers.
The book is very well written to reach out to teenagers of today, describing life as we would see it even though Starr is 16 herself. The dialogue is well used to assist the development of the story and Angie Thomas has made up a highly believable plot and setting meaning the story sticks in your head. I love the way it is written quite casually, but in a good way - it makes references to a lot of popular culture amongst teens today making it a very credible story. The characters are so well developed that they have stayed in my head long after I have finished reading the book and even when I was reading the book, their personalities were so convincing and consistent that I was able to predict the way they would behave, and what they were likely to say.
To sum up this up, I would definitely recommend this to anybody around my age and I would very happily read this book again. It is a shame that Angie Thomas hasn't written a sequel, but there is a film coming out later this year and I am looking forward to watching it!
Rating out of 5 stars: 5 !
