Salt to the Sea
When I first opened the book and saw it was narrated by different characters, my heart sank a bit; I realized that I had to really concentrate to remember who was who. So, I read the book in two sittings and I am so glad I did. It was then easy to remember the personality of each narrator telling the story and to follow their journey to the sea to escape the advances of the Russian army at the end of 1945. I learned a lot about history from reading the novel and I was really moved at the end too. I learned quickly to care about most of the narrators and to detest one completely.
Some of the scenes were particularly harrowing and stayed with me; knowing the novel was based on true events made it really sad. I would definitely recommend this novel but not for younger readers as it is upsetting.
